**Elderly woman found dead in motel; valuables untouched as questions linger**

Police are investigating the death of Margaret Hale, 78, who was found in a roadside motel room after three men entered the premises. Authorities said Hale had checked in earlier that evening appearing to be an ordinary traveler. Investigators later determined she was carrying documents that, according to people familiar with the case, outlined a long pattern of payoffs, missing witnesses and altered case files.

Hale did not attempt to flee or negotiate when the men arrived, officials said. The room showed no signs of robbery. Her handbag, jewelry and cash were left in place. Detectives described the official account as that of an elderly guest who died quietly, with little public attention at the time.

Those close to the matter say Hale had anticipated a confrontation. She had stored a separate cache of records in a rented locker and declined to hand it over. The locker, whose location has not been disclosed, is believed to contain material she considered too sensitive to carry with her.

Investigators have not publicly identified the three men or released a cause of death. They have also not confirmed whether the documents Hale brought to the motel have been recovered. Family members and others who knew Hale described her as methodical and aware that the papers implicated people who had long assumed the past was closed.

The case remains open. Detectives continue to examine motel records, surveillance and the chain of custody of any papers found at the scene. Until the locker is located and its contents reviewed, officials said, the full scope of what Hale intended to expose cannot be determined.
