Shots Fired Outside White House Correspondents\u2019 Dinner; President Evacuated, Suspect Arrested<\/strong><\/p>\n

WASHINGTON \u2014 Gunfire erupted Saturday night outside the White House Correspondents\u2019 Association dinner at the Washington Hilton, forcing the evacuation of President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance and members of the Cabinet as Secret Service agents subdued an armed man in the hotel lobby.<\/p>\n

The incident unfolded as the annual black-tie gala, long known as \u201cnerd prom,\u201d was getting under way. The event, which typically mixes political satire with networking among journalists, administration officials and celebrities, was halted amid panic and confusion. Organizers later canceled the remainder of the program.<\/p>\n

Law enforcement officials identified the suspect as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California. According to police accounts and photographs released after the arrest, Allen was taken into custody in the lobby, shirtless and pinned to the floor by Secret Service agents. Authorities said he was armed with a 12-gauge shotgun, a .38-caliber pistol and multiple knives. He charged toward a security checkpoint in what investigators described as an attempt to reach the president\u2019s location inside the hotel.<\/p>\n

One Secret Service agent was shot at close range during the confrontation. President Trump later said the agent was struck by a \u201cvery powerful gun\u201d but survived because of a bulletproof vest and did not suffer life-threatening injuries.<\/p>\n

Interim D.C. Police Chief Jeffrey Carroll said the suspect appeared to be a lone actor and was likely a guest at the hotel. Officials said there was no indication of a broader threat to the public after the arrest.<\/p>\n

Trump, who was unharmed, praised the Secret Service and local law enforcement. \u201cThey acted quickly and bravely,\u201d he said, adding that they did a \u201cfantastic job.\u201d He described Allen as a \u201csick person\u201d and said authorities were searching the suspect\u2019s residence in California.<\/p>\n

At a later briefing, the president reflected on the mood among those who had been inside the ballroom. He said the crisis produced an unexpected sense of unity among journalists and officials from both parties. The dinner, he noted, is dedicated to freedom of the press; the shared experience of the evacuation, he added, felt \u201cvery beautiful\u201d in that context. He also said he had \u201cfought like hell\u201d to continue the program because he had prepared remarks critical of the press corps.<\/p>\n

Organizers initially hoped to resume the evening. By 9:45 p.m., however, they announced the event was canceled. Officials later said the dinner would be rescheduled within 30 days. It was subsequently held on July 24 at the Waldorf Astoria.<\/p>\n

Investigators said they recovered a manifesto indicating Allen intended to target senior administration officials, prioritizing them by rank. He was later charged with attempting to assassinate the president, interstate transportation of a firearm with intent to commit a felony, and using a firearm during a crime of violence. Motive remained under investigation.<\/p>\n

The episode was among the most serious security breaches at a high-profile political gathering in Washington in recent years. It prompted an immediate review of safety protocols at the Washington Hilton and renewed scrutiny of protection around the president, who had survived assassination attempts in Butler, Pennsylvania, in July 2024 and at his Florida golf club in September 2024.<\/p>\n
