He said he was sworn in last August and had always planned to serve about one year.

“Today I submitted my formal resignation as the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Strategic Readiness,” Moeller wrote. “When I took on this task for @POTUS, @SecWar, & @USW_PR_HONTata, I promised a year; another year away from my wife whom I miss dearly. The resignation takes effect in 2 weeks.”

Moeller said he intends to return to the Black Hills, spend time with family, and stay out of public debate about his tenure. “I intend to go back to the Black Hills, recharge, chop lots of firewood for the winter, and ignore any and all journalists trying to get me to talk about my time in this historic and consequential administration,” he wrote.

In a follow-up post, he rejected comparisons to a more contentious recent departure. “For those of you expecting some sort of Joe Kent career suicide, I’m afraid you’ll be sadly disappointed,” he said, referring to former National Counterterrorism Center Director Joe Kent, who resigned citing opposition to U.S. policy in the Iran war.

The announcement comes as some outlets have framed recent personnel changes in the Trump administration as evidence of internal strain. Moeller’s own account, however, presented the exit as planned rather than as a protest or a sudden break with Hegseth.

**Background and role**

Moeller brought a long national-security résumé to the Pentagon. He began government service as an Air Force intelligence specialist in the 1970s, later joined the CIA as a paramilitary operations officer, and completed multiple overseas assignments before retiring from the agency in 2013.

His Pentagon biography described that mix of intelligence work and time in war zones as giving him “a unique perspective on readiness, training, and professional education,” aligned with the administration’s “America First” agenda and Hegseth’s emphasis on what the secretary calls a restoration of the “warrior ethos.”

At the Defense Department, Moeller worked under Anthony Tata, the undersecretary of defense for personnel and readiness. Tata reports through the department’s leadership structure to Deputy Defense Secretary Steve Feinberg, Hegseth’s second-in-command.

Moeller did not accuse the Pentagon of mismanagement, did not criticize Hegseth, and said he would not discuss internal details with reporters after leaving.

**Separate speculation about Hegseth**

In a separate development not directly tied to Moeller’s resignation, reports have circulated that Hegseth could consider a future presidential bid and become a contender for the MAGA coalition after President Donald Trump. The Pentagon disputed that reporting.

“Secretary Hegseth is not running for president, and his main priority is leading the War Department,” a Pentagon spokesperson told NBC News. “All other speculation is foolish.”

Hegseth himself rejected the story after it was published. “We told NBC that, but they just lie w/ anonymous ‘sources’,” he wrote.

The two stories have been discussed together in some political coverage: one an announced, time-limited departure by a mid-level political appointee; the other unconfirmed speculation about Hegseth’s ambitions. Moeller’s public statements addressed only his own exit and his intention to leave quietly.

**What the resignation does — and does not — show**

Personnel turnover is common in presidential administrations, especially after the first year, when many appointees who accepted short-term assignments begin to rotate out. Moeller’s explanation is consistent with that pattern: a stated one-year commitment, family considerations, and an explicit refusal to become a public critic.

That does not settle every question about morale or policy disputes elsewhere in the Defense Department. Other senior officials, including Army Secretary Dan Driscoll, have been reported in recent weeks as departing or considering departure amid friction over personnel decisions. Moeller, however, did not link his resignation to those disputes.

His final public message emphasized routine closure rather than rupture: a year promised, a year served, and a return home. The resignation is scheduled to take effect in two weeks.

**Hegseth aide resigns after a year at Pentagon, citing original commitment** WASHINGTON — A senior aide to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has submitted his resignation after roughly a year at …

[1

post-453","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news
["GET
