FORT WORTH, Texas \u2014<\/strong>\u00a0Former Rep. Kay Granger, the longtime Texas Republican who broke historic barriers in Fort Worth and Washington, has died at 83, closing the chapter on a political career that spanned nearly three decades in Congress and included leadership of the powerful House Appropriations Committee.<\/p>\n

Granger, who represented Texas\u2019 12th Congressional District from 1997 through 2025, died Aug. 2, according to the U.S. House Office of the Historian. She was born Jan. 18, 1943, in Greenville, Texas, and grew up in Fort Worth.<\/p>\n

Her career included several historic firsts. She became Fort Worth\u2019s first woman mayor in 1991 and, after winning election to Congress in 1996, became the first Republican woman from Texas elected to the U.S. House. In 2023, she reached another milestone when she became the first Republican woman to chair the House Appropriations Committee.<\/p>\n

From Fort Worth to Washington<\/h3>\n

Granger graduated from Eastern Hills High School and earned a bachelor\u2019s degree from Texas Wesleyan University in 1965. Before entering elected office, she worked as a teacher and later became a business owner.<\/p>\n

Her political career began in Fort Worth, where she served on the city\u2019s Zoning Commission from 1981 to 1989 and on the City Council from 1989 to 1991. She became mayor in 1991 and served until 1995.<\/p>\n

Her years in city government established a reputation that eventually carried her to Capitol Hill. In 1996, she won election to the U.S. House and began serving in January 1997.<\/p>\n

Granger ultimately served 14 consecutive terms, leaving Congress in January 2025 after deciding not to seek reelection.<\/p>\n

A Long Career on Appropriations<\/h3>\n

Granger spent roughly 25 years on the House Appropriations Committee, one of Congress\u2019 most influential panels because of its role in determining federal spending.<\/p>\n

She joined the committee in 1999 and served on numerous subcommittees before becoming its Republican ranking member and later chairwoman. In January 2023, House Republicans officially selected her to lead the full committee for the 118th Congress, making her the first Republican woman to hold the chair.<\/p>\n

National defense was another major focus of her congressional career. Granger chaired the Appropriations Defense Subcommittee during the 115th Congress and frequently emphasized military funding and defense-related priorities affecting North Texas.<\/p>\n

Her district also included major defense contractors and military facilities, giving defense policy an important role in her work on Capitol Hill.<\/p>\n

A Historic Texas Political Legacy<\/h3>\n

Granger\u2019s influence extended beyond Washington. Her years as Fort Worth\u2019s first female mayor established an important milestone in the city\u2019s political history, while her congressional career made her one of the most prominent Texas Republicans of her generation.<\/p>\n

In November 2024, colleagues and congressional staff honored her career with a portrait unveiling at the House Appropriations Committee. At the time, she reflected on her service representing the people of Texas\u2019 12th District and leading the committee.<\/p>\n

Granger\u2019s departure from Congress in January 2025 marked the end of a political career that had taken her from local government to one of the most influential financial positions in the House.<\/p>\n

Her legacy is defined by the barriers she broke and by her sustained presence in the institutions she served \u2014 from Fort Worth City Hall to the U.S. Capitol.<\/p>\n
