President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were aboard Marine One when the helicopter was forced to make an unscheduled landing in the United Kingdom.<\/strong><\/p>\n

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters that Trump and Melania had to switch helicopters because of a \u201chydraulics issue.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOut of an abundance of caution, the pilots landed at a local airfield before reaching Stansted Airport,\u201d Leavitt said. \u201cThe president and first lady safely boarded the support helicopter.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Marine One flight was expected to take about 20 minutes, traveling from the prime minister\u2019s landing zone at Chequers to Stansted Airport. However, the trip took nearly 40 minutes because of the helicopter issue.<\/p>\n

Investment in the U.K.<\/h2>\n

King Charles III and Queen Camilla welcomed the Trumps for the president\u2019s unprecedented second state visit to the United Kingdom. The visit included discussions on trade, technology, energy and major investment commitments between the two countries.<\/p>\n

On Thursday, Prime Minister Keir Starmer highlighted a \u00a3250 billion package of investment flowing between the United Kingdom and the United States. He described the agreement as a major step in strengthening the U.K.-U.S. economic relationship.<\/p>\n

Trump spent the morning at Windsor Castle with King Charles III before traveling by Marine One to Chequers, the prime minister\u2019s country residence, for meetings focused on politics, business and economic cooperation.<\/p>\n

Trump and Starmer Meet With Business Leaders<\/h2>\n

Following private meetings between Trump and Starmer, the two leaders met with business executives at a reception at Chequers. Their discussions covered the U.K.-U.S. relationship and cooperation in areas including technology, energy and investment.<\/p>\n

Starmer described the new agreement as a \u201ctech-prosperity deal.\u201d Trump said it would create \u201cbillions of dollars of opportunities\u201d and give the United States greater access to the U.K.\u2019s aerospace supply chain.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re taking the next logical step with a historic agreement on science and technology partnerships, and this will create new government, academic, and private-sector cooperation in areas such as AI,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n

He also highlighted cooperation in quantum computing, fusion energy, 6G and civil nuclear power, while emphasizing the importance of expanding electricity generation to meet growing energy demands from artificial intelligence and other technologies.<\/p>\n

The U.K. government said the broader package included major commitments from companies in sectors including AI, advanced manufacturing, clean energy and nuclear power.<\/p>\n

Nuclear Energy and Technology<\/h2>\n

Trump also highlighted an agreement involving American company X-Energy and British company Centrica to develop advanced modular nuclear reactors in the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n

The companies plan to build up to 12 advanced modular reactors in Hartlepool as part of a wider U.K. program targeting a 6-gigawatt nuclear fleet. The project is expected to generate enough electricity to power up to 1.5 million homes and could create as many as 2,500 jobs, according to the U.K. government.<\/p>\n

\u201cSeven decades after British genius Alan Turing pioneered the field, this agreement will also help America and our British allies dominate the future of artificial intelligence,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou need the energy. You have to have the energy. That\u2019s one thing I learned very quickly. They need a lot of electricity,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

The U.K. government said the state visit produced a record package of commercial commitments, including \u00a3150 billion in newly announced U.S. investment in the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n

Trump Returns to the White House<\/h2>\n

Trump returned to the White House on Thursday, September 18, 2025, following his state visit to the United Kingdom.
