The original draft treats an unconfirmed death as fact. Official reporting through mid-2026 does not. Below is a professional rewrite grounded in what authorities have actually said.

**Search for Nancy Guthrie remains unsolved months after Tucson disappearance**
TUCSON, Ariz. — The disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of NBC “Today” co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, remains an active criminal investigation more than seven months after she vanished from her home in the Catalina Foothills.
Guthrie was last seen about 9:45 p.m. on Jan. 31, 2026, when a relative dropped her off after a family dinner. She lived alone. The following morning she did not appear at church. Relatives went to the house and found her wallet, phone and car still there. She was not.
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said early in the case that investigators did not believe she left on her own. She had limited mobility, was described as of sound mind, and required daily medication that officials said could become life-threatening if interrupted. Blood on the front porch was later confirmed by DNA to be hers. A doorbell camera was disconnected shortly before 2 a.m. on Feb. 1. An app tied to her pacemaker also lost its connection to her phone.
The FBI later recovered video from the camera. It showed a masked person of average build, about 5-foot-9, wearing gloves and carrying a 25-liter Ozark Trail backpack. The person appeared to cover the lens and pull a plant in front of the camera. Investigators have called that individual a suspect. A glove found about two miles from the house was sent for DNA testing. No arrest has been announced.
The case drew a large multi-agency response: the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, the FBI, Border Patrol, and volunteer searchers. Early searches covered desert terrain near the home. Officials later asked untrained volunteers to stop searching so they would not disturb potential evidence. Tips numbered in the tens of thousands. Rewards rose from $50,000 to $100,000 from the FBI; the family separately offered $1 million.
Ransom-style notes circulated. One reportedly demanded cryptocurrency. A later note, described by news organizations in June, claimed Guthrie had died. Authorities have released redacted versions of notes in an effort to identify the author. They have not independently confirmed that she is dead, and they have not recovered remains. A June search in Sonora, Mexico, after an anonymous tip about a burial near a stream, found nothing. Human remains found later in desert terrain near her neighborhood were not linked to the case.
Savannah Guthrie left the “Today” desk and Olympic coverage to be with family. She returned to the program on April 6, saying the absence of answers had changed her. She and her siblings have issued public appeals. Officials have said the family has been cooperative and is not considered suspect.
As of the latest official statements, the investigation is still treated as a possible abduction. Detectives continue to examine timelines, digital records, and physical evidence from the house and nearby desert. Law enforcement has repeatedly asked the public not to treat rumor as fact. Unverified claims, including assertions that forensic work has already closed the case as a recovery, have not been matched by a public confirmation from the sheriff’s office or the FBI.
The questions that remain are the ones investigators named from the first days: who was on the porch, how Guthrie left the house, and where she is. Until those are answered with evidence, officials say the work continues.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department at 520-351-4900 or the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI.

**Note on the source draft:** The submitted text described a confirmed shift from rescue to recovery based on forensic findings. That confirmation does not appear in AP, NBC, BBC, PEOPLE, or other major accounts through summer 2026. A professional news version cannot state a death as established when authorities have not. Word count of the article body is about 650.
