**Search for Nancy Guthrie remains active as family and investigators confront unanswered questions**
TUCSON, Ariz. — More than seven months after 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie vanished from her home in the Catalina Foothills, the investigation into her disappearance remains open, with no confirmed recovery of remains and no arrests announced.
Guthrie, the mother of NBC “Today” co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, was last seen on the evening of Jan. 31, 2026, after dinner at the nearby home of her eldest daughter, Annie Guthrie, and son-in-law Tommaso Cioni. Cioni drove her home around 9:45–9:50 p.m. Relatives reported her missing the following day after she failed to appear for church. Blood later confirmed as hers was found on the front porch. Her pacemaker app lost contact with her devices in the early morning hours of Feb. 1. Doorbell camera footage released by the FBI showed a masked, armed person tampering with the camera.
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos and federal partners have treated the case as a likely abduction. The Guthrie family, including siblings and spouses, was publicly cleared as suspects. Investigators have described the family as cooperative and as victims.
Two communications attributed by authorities to the person or persons responsible were sent shortly after the disappearance. The first demanded cryptocurrency for Guthrie’s release. The second, whose contents were later disclosed, stated that she had died soon after being taken, that her death was not intended and was believed to be heart-related, and that she was “buried in nature.” Authorities have said they consider the notes credible, but they have not produced her remains or identified a suspect in public.
Human remains discovered in the Tucson area in May and August were examined and ruled unrelated to the case. One find was described as prehistoric; another, located about 15 miles from Guthrie’s home, showed no indication of a connection, officials said.
As of late summer, Nanos said investigators still had substantial DNA and video evidence under review and that the case had not gone cold. Labs have continued analysis of mixed DNA recovered from the property, including material associated with a glove linked to the person seen on camera. A combined reward exceeding $1 million has been offered for information leading to Guthrie’s recovery.
Savannah Guthrie took leave from “Today” after the disappearance and returned in April. She and her siblings have issued repeated public appeals, including video messages asking for proof of life and, later, for the return of their mother so the family could have peace. In recent weeks she has spoken of her mother in terms that reflect prolonged absence and grief, while continuing to ask the public for tips.
Annie Guthrie, a poet and jeweler based in Tucson, and Cioni, a biology teacher, were among the last people known to have seen Nancy Guthrie. They have faced intense online speculation despite official clearance. Family friends and the sheriff have asked the public to leave them alone and to avoid treating rumor as fact.
Law enforcement has repeatedly cautioned against premature conclusions and social-media theories that could interfere with the investigation. Officials have emphasized that the work now centers on timelines, digital records, physical evidence from the residence, and any remaining leads—not on a publicly confirmed recovery operation in the desert.
The case illustrates the difficulty of a high-profile missing-person investigation that may become a no-body homicide inquiry. Experts note that prosecution can proceed without remains if forensic, digital, and circumstantial evidence is strong enough, but investigators have not announced that threshold has been met.
Community vigils and messages of support have continued in Tucson. For the Guthrie family, the absence of a definitive physical finding has left both the question of location and the full circumstances unresolved. Authorities say they will release significant developments when they occur and continue to ask anyone with information to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department or the FBI.
The search that began as a rescue effort has stretched into a long forensic and investigative process. Hope for a reunion has given way, for many following the case, to a quieter demand for accountability and answers—without an official declaration that those answers have arrived.
