šŸ’–Marine One Forced to Make Emergency Landing with Trump, Melania

**LONDON** — President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump were forced to change helicopters on Sept. 18, 2025, after Marine One developed a hydraulic problem on the last leg of a state visit to Britain. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said the couple was not hurt and completed the trip after a short delay.

The scheduled hop was about 20 minutes, from the landing zone at Chequers, the British prime minister’s country residence, to London Stansted Airport, where Air Force One was waiting. Leavitt said that ā€œdue to a minor hydraulic issue, and out of an abundance of caution, the pilots landed at a local airfield before reaching Stansted Airport.ā€ BBC reporting identified the divert field as Luton Airport. Emergency vehicles were seen on the tarmac. The Trumps boarded a support helicopter, known like Marine One as a ā€œwhite top,ā€ and arrived at Stansted roughly 20 minutes behind the press pool. The White House said the full journey took close to 40 minutes. They later departed for Washington. Trump joked with reporters after takeoff that they should fly safely because he was on the plane.

The incident came at the close of an unusual second state visit. King Charles III and Queen Camilla hosted the Trumps at Windsor Castle. On Thursday, Trump flew from Windsor to Chequers for talks with Prime Minister Keir Starmer and a reception with business executives. Officials said the private agenda included Ukraine, the war in Gaza, trade and technology. Starmer called the U.S.-U.K. relationship the most ā€œnatural partnership in the worldā€ and promoted a large two-way investment package; public figures cited in the visit ranged from tens of billions of pounds in specific tech pledges to broader claims of hundreds of billions in mutual investment. Those totals mix government memorandums with private announcements and should not be treated as a single appropriated sum.

At Chequers the two governments signed a Technology Prosperity Deal, a memorandum on cooperation in artificial intelligence, civil nuclear power, fusion and quantum technology. It was presented as a follow-on to an Economic Prosperity Deal. Trump said the accord sat atop a ā€œmassive waveā€ of private-sector deals he put at more than $350 billion, ā€œheadlined byā€ $136 billion from Blackstone. He singled out Blackstone’s Stephen Schwarzman and Nvidia’s Jensen Huang from the room. He also cited a project involving U.S. firm X-energy and Britain’s Centrica to deploy modular nuclear reactors in the United Kingdom, which he said could generate more than $50 billion in economic value, create up to 2,500 jobs and power 1.5 million homes. Starmer pointed to investments from Nvidia, Nscale, OpenAI, Google and Salesforce and called the package a ā€œtech-prosperity deal.ā€ Trump said it would give the United States ā€œbetter access to the UK’s world-class aerospace supply chainā€ and that AI ā€œis taking over the world.ā€ He added that AI requires large amounts of electricity.

The memorandum itself is an understanding between governments, not a binding appropriations bill. Subsequent British reporting said Washington later judged progress on related trade barriers insufficient and that parts of the tech framework stalled, even as officials discussed whether to revive it. The September 2025 ceremony remains the public high-water mark of the visit’s economic pitch.

Marine One is the call sign for any Marine Corps helicopter carrying the president. Unplanned landings for mechanical caution are rare in public view but are built into the support-helicopter system that travels with the president. In this case the White House described the problem as minor, the landing as precautionary, and the passengers as safe. The political story of the week was the Windsor pageantry and the Chequers investment announcements. The operational story was simpler: a hydraulic warning, a divert to Luton, a swap of aircraft, and a late arrival at Stansted before the flight home.
