President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were forced to switch helicopters in the United Kingdom after Marine One experienced a minor hydraulic issue.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the pilots landed at a local airfield as a precaution before the helicopter reached Stansted Airport.
“Due to a minor hydraulic issue, and out of an abundance of caution, the pilots landed at a local airfield before reaching Stansted Airport,” Leavitt said. “The president and first lady safely boarded the support helicopter.”
The incident delayed the couple’s journey from Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s Chequers country residence to Stansted Airport. Trump and Melania later arrived safely at the airport and boarded Air Force One for their return trip to the United States.
U.S.-U.K. Investment Partnership
King Charles III and Queen Camilla hosted Trump and Melania for the president’s second state visit to the United Kingdom. During the visit, the two countries highlighted a major package of trade and investment commitments.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the agreements as a £250 billion package of investment flowing in both directions across the Atlantic. The package included commitments involving technology, energy, finance, manufacturing and other sectors.
Trump spent part of the visit at Windsor Castle with King Charles III before traveling by Marine One to Chequers, the prime minister’s country residence, for meetings focused on political and economic issues.
Technology and Business Cooperation
After their private discussions, Trump and Starmer met with business executives at a reception highlighting new U.S.-U.K. commercial partnerships.
Starmer described the agreement as a “tech-prosperity deal.” Trump said the arrangements would create billions of dollars in opportunities and expand U.S. access to the United Kingdom’s aerospace and technology sectors.
The leaders also highlighted cooperation in artificial intelligence, quantum computing, nuclear energy and other emerging technologies. The White House said the broader partnership represented approximately $350 billion in new commercial outcomes between the United States and the United Kingdom.
Trump also emphasized the importance of energy infrastructure for the development of artificial intelligence and other advanced technologies.
Nuclear Energy and Advanced Technology
Among the agreements announced during the visit was a plan involving American company X-Energy and British company Centrica to develop advanced modular nuclear reactors in the United Kingdom.
According to the British government, the companies plan to build up to 12 advanced modular reactors, with the Hartlepool project expected to generate enough electricity to power as many as 1.5 million homes and create up to 2,500 jobs. The companies have estimated that the broader program could generate at least £40 billion in economic value.
The visit also highlighted cooperation in artificial intelligence, quantum computing and nuclear energy. The White House said the agreements were intended to strengthen economic ties, scientific research and energy security between the two countries.
Trump Returns to the White House
After completing his two-day visit to the United Kingdom, Trump and the first lady departed from Stansted Airport aboard Air Force One and returned to the United States.
The helicopter incident caused a delay, but officials said Trump and Melania were safe and were able to continue their journey after transferring to a support helicopter.
