Trump Targeted Again in D.C. as Security Breach Raises Alarm

While the motive remains under investigation, authorities have said the suspect acted alone. Cole Tomas Allen, who had been staying at the Washington Hilton, was arrested after allegedly rushing through a Secret Service security checkpoint while armed. Federal authorities later charged him with attempting to assassinate President Donald Trump, along with other federal offenses.

The confrontation resulted in a Secret Service officer being struck in the chest by gunfire. The officer was wearing a ballistic vest, which helped prevent serious injury, and was later released from the hospital.

President Trump praised the rapid response of law enforcement, saying officers acted quickly to stop the threat before Allen could reach the ballroom where the dinner was taking place. Trump and other senior officials were evacuated from the event and were not injured.

Security Response and Investigation

Following the shooting, authorities launched an extensive investigation into Allen’s background, movements, weapons and possible motive. Investigators searched his residence in Torrance, California, and examined writings and other evidence recovered from his home and hotel room.

The incident also prompted renewed attention to security procedures at high-profile political events. The Washington Hilton said it had been operating under Secret Service security protocols, with protection coordinated among the Secret Service, local police and hotel security personnel.

The White House Correspondents’ Association dinner was ultimately canceled following the shooting. The incident brought the event to an abrupt end as attendees were evacuated and authorities secured the area.

Security Breach at the Nation’s Capital

The shooting at the Washington Hilton exposed the challenges of protecting a major political gathering attended by the president, senior administration officials, lawmakers and thousands of journalists and guests.

Federal prosecutors have since alleged that Allen planned the attack in advance, including booking a room at the hotel before the event and traveling from California to Washington, D.C. He has been charged with attempting to assassinate the president and other federal offenses.
