😄Marco Rubio Recounts 90-Minute Air Force One Scare After Officials Thought a Passenger Had Died

WASHINGTON — Secretary of State Marco Rubio has recounted an unusual incident aboard Air Force One in which he and other senior officials reportedly spent roughly 90 minutes trying to determine whether a person sleeping in a conference room might actually be experiencing a serious medical emergency.

Rubio described the episode during an appearance on The Katie Miller Podcast, recalling a situation that began as an ordinary moment but gradually became concerning when the individual appeared to remain completely unresponsive.

According to Rubio, the officials were returning from China when they noticed the person sleeping on one of the couches in the aircraft’s conference room. Despite the activity around the individual, Rubio said he could not determine whether the person was simply sleeping deeply or experiencing a medical emergency.

That left Rubio and his colleagues facing an awkward dilemma: Should they wake the person, call a doctor, or simply allow the individual to continue sleeping?

Rubio said the officials hesitated because there was always the possibility that nothing was wrong and that the person was simply enjoying an unusually deep sleep.

The alternative, however, was far more troubling.

ā€œIf they were dead, like what do you do?ā€ Rubio recalled asking.

The concern reportedly grew because Rubio said he could not see clear chest movement or establish a consistent breathing pattern.

Despite the uncertainty, the officials apparently did not immediately summon a physician or wake the individual. Instead, Rubio said they spent roughly 90 minutes debating what to do.

Eventually, the mystery was resolved without an emergency.

ā€œLuckily, the person was fine,ā€ Rubio said.

Rubio did not identify the individual involved, and there is no public evidence establishing who the person was. Social-media users nevertheless began offering their own theories, including speculation involving prominent political figures.

There is no evidence supporting those claims, and Rubio did not provide information identifying the individual.

The incident comes amid separate questions about Trump and sleep

The Air Force One story has also drawn attention because Rubio has previously faced questions about whether he had witnessed President Donald Trump falling asleep during official meetings.

During a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing in June 2026, Democratic Rep. Ted Lieu asked Rubio whether he had ever seen Trump fall asleep during a meeting.

Rubio said he had not.

ā€œI’ve never seen him fall asleep,ā€ Rubio told lawmakers, adding that Trump frequently works late and sometimes contacts him during the early morning hours.

Lieu then showed video footage from a Cabinet meeting in which Trump appeared to have his eyes closed while Rubio was speaking. Lieu characterized the footage as showing Trump asleep, while Rubio disputed that interpretation and maintained that he had never personally seen Trump fall asleep during a meeting. PBS also reported on the exchange and the competing interpretations of the footage.

The episode has therefore become part of a broader public discussion surrounding appearances by Trump in which his eyes have been closed during meetings. In earlier televised remarks, Trump himself said that on one occasion he had closed his eyes because the meeting was lengthy and boring, rather than because he was asleep.

The Air Force One incident involving the unidentified passenger, however, was separate from those political disputes. Rubio’s account centered on an unusual situation in which officials were temporarily unable to determine whether someone was simply sleeping or potentially experiencing a medical emergency.

The incident ultimately ended without injury. What began as a routine sighting of a sleeping passenger became an extended period of uncertainty for Rubio and his colleagues.

In the end, the person was fine, leaving the officials with an unusual story rather than the emergency they had feared.
